Spring
Why
We have far more power than we know. Our inner experience is up to us. We cultivate our own garden. And if we are willing to carry a little water, more will be provided.
The lotus flower is a symbol of spiritual enlightenment, since it grows from the muddy, murky depths but blooms with astonishing beauty. The red lotus represents love.
The frog represents transformation. The timid little rabbit acknowledges that it takes courage to undertake this journey.
How
Doll’s winter coat - hand crocheted by my maternal grandmother, Nellie Freeman.
Setting - dollhouse purchased at Circa
Watering can - given to me by my friend Wendy when she moved and was temporarily “between gardens.”
Water falling from the watering can - poured by my partner DJ so I could photograph it.
Lotus flower and pond - at Springdale Water Gardens in Greenville, Va
Waterfall - in the Tropical Butterfly House in the Pacific Science Center in Seattle.
Ferns - Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
Vine on window frame - weed from my garden!
Frog (can you find him?) - in the pond my neighbor Tim constructed in his front yard to host native plant and animal life.
Rabbit - hangs out in our neighborhood. Hasn’t chewed my garden yet!
Snowy landscapes - in Oregon, from a train window en route from Los Angeles to Seattle.
Snow on the ground, footsteps in the snow - my morning walk in Charlottesville, Va after a snow storm.
Falling snow - photographed as it was falling outside my house in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Rusty texture - from a garden chair at my friends Wendy and Kirk’s house.
Boots - I was planning to ask Liv to wear a pair of my boots for this scene, but she turned up for the photoshoot wearing the EXACT SAME BOOTS. Kismet!
